Approaching this Christmas, reading Luther, something really struck me which is so obvious, which I must have heard it a hundred times, but which hit me with fresh force and warmed my heart like I’d never heard it before: that Christmas is about THE FATHER GIVING US HIS SON.
to us a son is given (Isaiah 9:6)
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son (John 3:16)
It’s not first and foremost about us giving to God, us giving our lives. It’s not bottom up it’s top down. It’s about God giving to us.
And we’re not given Stuff, we’re given the SON, a person, the greatest person, the LORD, Beloved of the Father and Lover of our soul.
And he doesn’t just visit us (amazing as that would be), he is GIVEN to us. To stay. To have and to hold till death does not part us. The Life, The Righteous One, The Holy One becomes ours.
My beloved is mine, and I am his (Song of Songs 2:16)
Whoever has the Son… (1 John 5:12)
Have a very Happy Christmas enjoying the Son!
