“The ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus – to testify to the gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20:24). That’s how Paul sums up his long and varied ministry of apologetics, evangelism, discipleship, doctrinal teaching, preaching of the whole counsel of God to unbelievers and believers – all along he has simply been pointing to God’s gospel.
But was that just Paul’s commission? Look at how he hands on to the Ephesian elders: “I commit you to God and to the word of his grace” (Acts 20:32). Then look at his charge to Timothy: “Preach the word…. do the work of an evangelist” (2 Tim. 4:2-5). And to Titus: “He saved us, not because of works done by us… insist on these things” (Titus 3:5-8).
Faithful Bible teaching is gospel preaching.
But don’t we all know the gospel already? Why do we need to insist on these things? Tim Keller is brilliant on this:
What do you think?
